種名のquinquepeta と liliiflora との間で、どちらを使うべきか学者間に論争があるようです。インターネットのヒット数から見ると、日本は前者が優勢で、欧米では後者が優勢みたいです。

俗名では英仏語ともに、Lily magnolia, Magnolia à fleurs de lis 、つまり「ユリの花のマグノリア 」が優勢のようです。

モクレン属の話題で面白いと思うことの一つは、この属はハチなどの受粉を媒介する昆虫が出現する前に発達し、受粉媒介は甲虫に依存していた。集まってくる大きな甲虫に破壊されないように、花が頑丈にできているという説明です。

甲虫はミツバチやチョウなどに比べて、空中で停止したり、花にぶら下がる能力が未熟でしょうから、甲虫が長期滞在しやすいように、モクレン属は花を上向きする方向に進化したとも推測できそうですね。
